Money Spent on Preparation for CA Polls

Issue 42, October 21, 2007

By KTM Metro Reporter

In a press conference held at the Election Commission (EC) on October 16, 2007, Chief Election Commissioner, Bhoj Raj Pokharel disclosed the amount of money spent on preparation for the election for a Constituent Assembly (CA) so far. He said that the EC has spent Rs 510 million out of Rs 540 million received from different countries and international organizations as technical and logistic support.

The election was supposed to be held on November 22, 2007 but was postponed indefinitely as the seven-party alliance could not agree on the electoral system and on declaring Nepal a republic. In addition, the ethnic and Madheshi Nepalis have been deadly against the election for a CA based on the mixed-electoral system adopted by the seven-party alliance. They have been demanding an electoral system that would ensure their representation in a CA proportional to their population.
