Defense Minister Defends Himself

Issue 40, October 2, 2011

By KTM Metro Reporter

September 29, 2011: Defense Minister Sharad Singh Bhandari has publicly said that he has no intention of hurting so many leaders and people by his statement on the need for the Madheshi people integrating into the national life of Nepalis in general. He has said that his statement has been distorted making him look like a secessionist but he has never think of such thing in his life in the past and would not think in the future, too.

His statement has been apologetic and all the leaders including the Vaidya group of the UCPN-Maoist needs to understand him and stop doing anything to fuel this issue anymore. Rather they need to engage in completing the peace process and the constitution writing during the remaining two-month life of the Constituent Assembly.

President of NC Sushil Koirala, leaders of CPN-UML and Vaidya group of the UCPN-Maoist have charged Defense Minister Bhandari with threatening to separate 22 districts of Terai if a four-point deal signed between the UDMF and the UCPN-Maoist goes astray. They have demanded the prime minister immediately firing Defense Minister Bhandari for his remarks.

‘The Rising Nepal’ of today has quoted Defense Minister Bhandari, "I had made the statement on Monday that the inclusion of Madhesi youths in Nepal Army by fulfilling certain standards and by doing so the national integrity will be strengthened as per the norms of four-point agreement signed between Joint Madhesi Democratic Front and UCPN-Maoist. I had said that the Madhesi people of 22 districts should be brought to the mainstream to create national solidarity in feelings. I am firm in this commitment. My intention will be clear if the media go through the full text of the statement. I urge the media to give attention towards this line."
