China Union Pay (CUP) Enters Into An Agreement With Nepalese Bank

Issue 38, September 16, 2012

By KTM Metro Reporter

September 15, 2012: China Union Pay (CUP) has entered into an agreement with the Nepalese bank called Himalayan Bank for bankcard services in Nepal and elsewhere in the world. Following the agreement reached between CUP and Himalayan Bank, CUP bankcards will be immediately accepted by all automatic teller machines (ATMs) and point-of-sales (POS) machines owned by the Nepalese bank, the Chinese state-owned news agency Xinhua reports today.

CUP's agreement with Himalayan Bank makes the CUP bankcards acceptable to the ATM network of Smart Choice Technologies (P) Ltd., and the ATMs and merchant stores operated by Alpine Card Services P. Ltd. The new deal makes CUP bankcards acceptable to 70 percent of the total ATMs in Nepal and 60 percent of merchant stores.

Previously, CUP bankcard holders could withdraw money and make outstanding account inquiries at Nabil Bank Ltd. and Standard Chartered ATMs in Nepal.

Currently, CUP cards are acceptable in 130 countries and regions worldwide.
