By KTM Metro Reporter

June 18, 2013: The Mahakali River: border between Nepal and India has risen due to the heavy rains during the last few days. The river has caused floods on the Nepal side due to the heavy embankment built by India on its side causing the diversion of the river to Nepal, according to the local news reports.

The Mahakali River swept away 50 buildings including public homes and government buildings in the district headquarters Khalanga of the Darchula district yesterday; the river swept away houses of Dalit community and caused severe damage to the buildings of District Police Office and District Health Office. The flood also damaged 12 houses near the riverbank, nine huts and the postmortem room of the district health office. Nepal Army has kept a helicopter stand-by for possible emergency situation. The army said that some patients in the District Hospital were shifted to safer places; the flood in the Mahakali River has damaged the Kalagandh Hydropower Plant located at Bramhadev VDC and the roads, according to the news posted on gorkhapatraonline.com.

Local people blamed the Indian government’s road construction from Dharchula to Kalapani for the flood in Darchula region. Superintendent of Police Kuber Kathayat said that a number of landslides blocked the roads in the upper regions of the Darchula district headquarters.
