What Are The Prices Of Lawmakers?

Siddhi B Ranjitkar

June 1, 2018

Kathmandu: Finance Minister Dr Yubraj Khatiwada has allocated NPR 40 million to each lawmaker for implementing development projects at their respective constituencies in coordination with the provincial and local governments; however, some lawmakers belonging to the ruling communist party have been furious at the finance minister for making them work with the provincial and local elected officials, consequently dishonoring them, the news in “gorkhapatra” stated on June 1, 2018.

First, some lawmakers have been angry with the finance minister because probably they have to share the budget with the provincial and local elected officials in other words they would not have the monopoly on playing with NPR 40 million, as they had in the past causing so much concern for the common folks. Those lawmakers so mad at the finance minister needed to go to another lawmaker Gagan Thapa and ask him why the lawmakers needed not have the money for lawmakers to engage in the development work. Lawmaker Thapa had been deadly against distributing money to lawmakers in the name of development at their respective constituencies.

How could lawmakers feel themselves dishonored when they needed to work with other elected officials at the provincial and local units? In no way any elected lawmakers are honorable and dishonorable whether they are ward members, ward chairpersons, or provincial or federal lawmakers. They are all equal; the only question is some lawmakers work at the local level others at the provincial and even some others at the federal level. What is the difference between them when they are working for the common folks? One more thing, no lawmakers are above the people and they have no rights to call themselves honorable. They needed to honor the common folks and work for them. That is it.

If the lawmakers who have felt dishonored for working in conjunction with the provincial and local-level elected representatives, want to be really honorable then they need to go to their respective constituencies and work for resolving any problems individually or collectively the folks face. They need not be angry with the finance minister for making sure that the lawmakers having such a large amount of State money in other words people’s money would not spoil their mind and use the money for personal benefits. For which the lawmakers needed to be thankful to the finance minister rather than being so furious at him and shouting so wildly and loudly in the House of Representatives.

Those lawmakers probably incredibly shaming themselves stating they have been dishonored because they have to work with the provincial and local elected people’s representatives need to go to their respective constituencies and work with the people for resolving the daily problems such as the delay in the State service delivery, not having sufficient public transport even after ending the transport cartels, and the Nepal Food Corporation not setting the price of rice making the folks coming to buy rice walking for five days have to return in Humla even after the rice had been transported to the area.

Similarly, the lawmakers who have felt the shame at the need for working with other elected officials at provinces and local units must work with the home minister for making the contractors not doing their jobs even after getting money from the State so that every project would be completed on schedule no matter whether they are at the federal or provincial or local level. Those lawmakers are elected for the purpose of working for the common folks rather than being honorable and dishonorable whatever they would like to feel sometimes even sleeping at the House session if they attend and not even attending most of time but registering at the register for allowance and salaries they entitled to.

If the lawmakers fail in working for the common folks honoring the common folks rather than they themselves want to be honorable then probably their prices would be not more than NPR 40 million or whatever amount they would receive from the State in the name of development projects at their respective constituencies.

Finally, to think honorable is a feudal mindset; lawmakers are really elected by the people for rendering services to the common folks. Actually, they need to feel like the servants of the people because they are to work for the people. So, people are the honorable not the lawmakers.
