December 20, 2012: Secretary to the Ministry of Commerce and Supplies Lalmani Joshi and Chinese Ambassador to Nepal Yang Houlan jointly laid the foundation stone today for constructing the much-anticipated Inland Container Depot or dry port in Larcha, Nepal near the Tatopani customs on the northern border with China. This dry port will be the main trading gateway to the trade between the two neighbors, according to Xinhua: the state-run news agency of China.

According to the project agreement signed off in May 2012, the government of China will fund the construction of border inspection building and cargo warehouse, and a parking lot with a capacity of accommodating at least 158 big containers and 33 cars within the dry port premises; and the Chinese government also agreed to upgrade a 6.5 km road connecting the dry port with the border to China. After its completion of the construction, the dry port will ease the surging trade between Nepal and China.

"This project will become another symbol of China-Nepal traditional friendship and economic cooperation," Chinese ambassador Yang said at the ceremony, both the governments have attached great importance to the project and done a lot of work to facilitate it over the past few years and now finally made it a reality."

"Once the road is upgraded, it will speed up the smooth flow of vehicles and people in the border areas and enhance the trade flow and volume between our two countries," Joshi told Xinhua.

The 13.8 million U.S. dollars project expected to complete in 26 months, also promises to construct a 112-meter-long bridge over the Bhotekoshi River along the Arniko Highway connecting the Chinese border with Kathmandu: Nepalese capital.

Director General of the Customs Department of Nepal: Mukti Narayan Paudel said, “Once the dry port is constructed, the current customs office in Tatopani will be transferred to Larcha, and that the Chinese cargo trucks could go directly to the dry port.
