Paras Shah Shows His True Face

Issue 51, December 19, 2010

By KTM Metro Reporter

December 13, 2010: Deputy Prime Minister Sujata Koirala telephones Home Minister Bhim Rawal from abroad and urges him to arrest Former Crown Prince Paras Shah immediately because he has attempted on the lives of her daughter Melini, son-in-law Ruwel Choudhary and granddaughter at the Tiger Tops Resort in Chitwan on Saturday night, December 11, 2010.

At the same time, NC President Sushil Koirala has asked the government to immediately arrest Mr. Shah on the charges of an attempted murder. He has also started consulting with other political leaders what sorts of actions should be taken against the Shah. He has shown his disappointment at the delay in the government taking actions against Shah.

Son-in-law Ruwel Choudhary is married to Melini. Mother-in-law Sujata Koirala is married to a German. Naturally, her daughter and son-in-law are foreign nationals to Shah that possibly does not want to get further pinched hearing the negative remarks on him, his father and his country, too.

However, Nepalis are used to read and listen to the news about Shah doing such things in the past. So, this latest incident is just for showing his habit of getting provoked to raise an arm even in the slightest annoyance.

However, Shah in his online statement said, “I along with my family, on our way home from Sarlahi and Dhading, had a stop-over at the Tiger Tops hotel and were taking dinner when two foreign nationals reached out to me and started making irrelevant comments on my roles in yesteryears and the institution that I represent.” Shah has admitted that he has fired precautionary shots in the air after the foreign nationals have made unacceptable remarks against him, his family and his country

The police have arrested anybody on the report of firing immediately but in the case of Paras firing in the air allegedly targeting at the daughter and son-in-law of Deputy Prime Minister Sujata Koirala have just formed a three-member team comprising Deputy Inspector General of Nepal Police Ganga Prasad Pandey as the head, and Senior Superintendent of Nepal Police Rana Bahadur Chand and Senior Superintendent of National Investigation Department (NID) Arjun Kumar K.C as the members to investigate the shooting by Paras at the Tiger Tops Lodge in Chitwan on the Saturday night. They have just gone to Chitwan rather than taking Paras in custody for inquiry and investigation into the incident.

Under the pressure of the media and certainly of NC leaders, the Home Ministry has issued a statement saying the local police in Chitwan have started investigation into the incident. The local police need to immediately take Paras in custody following the rule of law and as they do in the case of such incident involving any other common folks.

The Home Ministry has done more talking than doing anyhting. Spokesperson for Home Ministry Jaya Mukunda Khanal has said that the ministry will take actions against anybody found guilty of illegal act. That is what the Ministry needs to do following the rule of law. However, the Ministry neither orders to arrest Paras immediately nor even takes actions against the police that have failed in taking actions against Paras. Thus, the Home Minister does more talking than doing anything.

At the same time, the state-run newspaper ‘The Rising Nepal’ of December 13, 2010 reports quoting the Deputy PM’s personal secretary Hari Dhungana that Paras Shah has tried to shoot at Koirala’s son-in-law Ruwel Chaudhary, daughter Melini and grand-daughter. The Resort management has escorted the Chaudhary family to a safe destination in the nearby district Nawalparasi. This statement is enough for the police to arrest Paras.

Before the firing incident Paras has been in the hot discussion with the Chaudhary family and has blamed the Chaudhary family for overthrowing the monarchy according to the news in ‘The Rising Nepal’. Paras has been enjoying the stay in Chitwan Resort with his wife and family since Wednesday, and has returned back to Kathmandu on Monday, December 12, 2010.

Officiating Prime Minister Madhav Nepal is silent on the shooting by Parasa apparently targeting at the family of the daughter of Deputy Prime Minister Sujata Koirala currently in Indonesia on an official visit. All these guys from Prime Minister down to the police in Chitwan have the mindset of even the former royals are above the law. So, they have not been able to do anything so far.
