Resident of Bangemuda Chiniyalal Singh had started off a private school called Mahabir Institute at his home for the children of the common folks in 1940, when the then Rana regime had run only one school called Durbar School for the children of the royalties.

The then Rana administration confiscated all the property of Chiniyalal Singh, and sent him to the life imprisonment for opening the school. The Rana administration forcibly feed him flattened rice and yogurt when he was suffering from high fever causing his death in 1944, according to his daughter Usha Singh.
