Isssue 47, November 22, 2009

By KTM Metro Reporter in Kathmandu

November 19, 2009: the report of the Transparency International on corruption rating of the 180 countries released on November 17 has rated Nepal at 143rd of 180 countries in the Corruption Perception Index (CPI). The state administration and the police working for under the table payments, the ministers taking billions of commissions and the state anti-corruption agency not having authority to immediately punish the corrupt state employees, and other state agencies covering up the corrupt officials and ministers, and at the same time politicians working with no accountability to the people have resulted into so much of corruption in Nepal.

The Transparency International has rated each country from 0 to 10 in the CPI.  The less corrupt countries score highest marks and the most corrupt countries score less marks in the CPI. New Zealand scored 9.4, Denmark 9.3, Singapore and Sweden 9.2 each and Switzerland 9.0 showing the almost no corruption in these countries. Their functioning public institutions, their accountability to the people and political stability are the main reasons attributed to such corruption less situation in these countries.
