Chairman Of IEC Meeting With Election Commissioners

Issue 13, March 31, 2013

By KTM Metro Reporter

March 26, 2013: Chairman of Interim Election Council (IEC) met with the Chief Election Commissioner and other Election Commissioners to find out any progress made to holding elections as scheduled. All the voters’ lists have to be updated by the end of April if the elections were to hold in June. Chairman of IEC Khil Raj Regmi instructed the Election Commissioners to complete the updating of the voters’ list by the end of the April, according to the news on ‘gorkhapatraonline.com’ of today.

The district offices of the Election Commission have already started off updating the voters’ list. Cadres of the CPN-Maoist-Vaidhya had obstructed the officials of the district Election Commissions collecting names of voters in some districts. They looted the laptops of the staffs of the district Election Commissions stopping them from updating the voters’ lists. The CPN-Maoist-Vaidhya had been against holding the elections to a new Constituent Assembly (CA).

Political parties had agreed on issuing voter’s cards based on the citizenship certificates but the Madheshi parties have been demanding to issue voters’ cards based on other documents, too. Finally, they have agreed on updating the voters’ lists of 2007 (2064), according to the news on ‘gorkhapatraonline.com’ of today.

The district administrations have expedited the issue of citizenship certificates to the eligible person in districts. The district Election Commission has to complete the updating of the voters’ list in slightly more than a month’s time.

Dev Gurung of the CPN-Maoist-Vaidhya had instructed the cadres of his party in his home district to obstruct all sorts of the state actions in the district. Gurung was for making the IEC failure in holding the lections to a new CA. He believed that the IEC was unconstitutional. His party demanded an all-party government to hold elections or a round-table of all parties represented on the dissolved CA.
