Break The Political Deadlock In The Snap Of His Fingers

Issue 42, October 17, 2010

By KTM Metro Reporter

October 12, 2010: speaking at the inaugural function of the Non-Resident Nepalese Day in Pokhara, Chairman of Constituent Assembly Subash Nemwang on Monday, October 11, 2010 has said that he can break the current political deadlock in the snap of his fingers if all political leaders urge him to do so; the election to a new Prime Minister will continue as long as NC Candidate Ram Chandra Poudel runs for the office of the Prime Minister, as the parliament cannot amend the election regulations, ‘The Rising Nepal’ reports.

Speaking at the function held in Biratnagar by Nepal Press Union today, Nepali Congress General Secretary Prakash Man Singh has said that NC Candidate Ram Chandra Poudel will continue the prime ministerial race until the political parties reach an agreement on the army integration and rehabilitation, arms management, disbanding of paramilitary structure of the Young Communist League, return of seized properties to its rightful owners, and constitution-writing, Myrepublica.com reports. So, it is unlikely that the current political deadlock will be broken at all if General Secretary Singh sticks to his demand.

At the same time, the meeting of the 27 political parties presided over by Chairman of Constituent Assembly (CA) Subash Nemwang on Monday, October 11, 2010 has formed a seven-member high-level taskforce comprising Chairman of UCPN-Maoist Prachanda, Chairman of CPN-UML Jhalanath Khanal, NC parliamentary party leader Ram Chandra Poudel, Chairman of Nepal Workers’ and Peasants’ Party Narayan Man Bijukchhe, President of Madheshi People’s Rights Forum Upendra Yadav, President of Nepal Democratic Socialist Party Prem Bahadur Singh and CA member Rukmini Chaudhary to resolve the differences cropped up among the members of the thematic committees on their reports, and then submit those reports to the full House of the CA and then forward to the Constitutional Committee for the final draft of a new constitution.

NC Prime Ministerial Candidate Ram Chandra Poudel has said that his party has never been a barrier to the peace process and the constitution writing but the UCPN-Maoist has been delaying it for promulgating a new constitution that suits its ideology; so, the country needs to hold a referendum on deciding whether to adopt a democratic constitution or a communist decree, nepalnews.com reports.

The Special Committee formed on October 02, 2010 with the members such as Barsa Man Pun from the UCPN-Maoist, Dr. Ram Saran Mahat from the NC, and Ishwar Pokharel from the CPN-UML is supposed to sort out the issues and then prepare an action plan on integration, rehabilitation package, harmonization of ranks and so on; however, the Special Committee has failed to do anything of that sorts they are supposed to do; so, it turns everything back to the officiating Prime Minister Madhav Nepal, myrepublica.com reports.
