Finding A Consensus Candidate For A New Prime Minister

Issue 49, December 2, 2012

By KTM Metro Reporter

November 27, 2012: finding a consensus candidate for a new prime minister has been next to impossible within the deadline the head of state: president Dr. Ram Baran Yadav has set for the political parties on November 23, 2012.

Even within the NC party that has been claiming the rights to head a new government has difficulty in selecting its candidate for a new prime minister. Then, such a candidate has to pass through the tests of other political parties, ultimately to be a consensus candidate.

Vice-president of NC Ram Chandra Poudel has been disappointed because the President of NC Sushil Koirala himself wanted to be the candidate for a new prime minister. Mr. Koirala has been sounding out the Madheshi leaders for their support for his candidacy, and called on Chairman of UCPN-Maoist Prachanda for his support, too.

The CPN-Maoist has declared its candidate for a new prime minister. The party Chairman Mohan Vaidya has proposed General Secretary Ram Bhadur Thapa as the candidate for the office of prime minister.

The ruling coalition of UCPN-Maoist and UDMF is not in a mood to quit the office. The ruling coalition leaders have been insisting on the opposition leaders on joining the current government for transforming it into a consensus government.

At the same time, finding a consensus candidate for a new prime minister has been the uphill task for the NC. The CPN-UML leaders have been putting pressure on the NC leaders to name a candidate for a new prime minister without delay.

President of NC Sushil Koirala is the man rejected by the voters in 2008. So, he has no people’s mandate for running the administration. If Mr. Koirala becomes a consensus candidate for a new prime minister, and the head of state appoints him to the office of prime minister then it will be the mockery of democracy in Nepal.

Nepal had had enough of such mockery of democracy. Another man called Madhav Nepal also rejected by the people in the elections in 2008, became the prime minister in 2009 with the support of the NC, CPN-UML and the UDMF, and ran the administration for more than two years, and emptied the state treasury.
