Nepalese Political Leaders In Confusion

Issue 53, December 30, 2012

By KTM Metro Reporter

December 24, 2012: in a news release, spokesperson for the CPN-Maoist Pampha Bhusal said that her party is concerned over the President’s latest act of limiting the politicians within the only key three parties and UDMF instead of seeking out a multiparty political consensus; for this reason, her party boycotted the meeting of all political parties having representation in the dissolved CA called by President Dr. Ram Baran Yadav today, according to the THT ONLINE news of today.

President Dr Ram Baran Yadav today once again has extended the deadline for building a consensus on a national unity government for six days until December 29, as the political leaders have continued to work on choosing a consensus candidate for a new prime minister. The ruling political parties want to continue the current government as a consensus government whereas the opposition coalition has been hell-bent on tearing down the current government before doing anything else.

Reading out a written statement to the leaders of the political parties having representation in the dissolved CA assembled at the Office of the President in Sheetal Niwas today morning, President Dr. Ram Baran Yadav asked the parties to come to an agreement on holding the Constituent Assembly elections, on the appointment of a new Prime Minister and formation of a Cabinet as per the Article 38(1) of the Interim Constitution, on the process of making appointment of the officials in the constitutional bodies, and justices of the Supreme Court of Nepal, and on other democratic measures that the President can take to resolve the political and constitutional crisis, writes THT ONLINE today.

In the letter the Prime Minister written to the president of NC Sushil Koirala, Prime Minister's personal secretary Bishwadeep Pandey said that Prime Minister Dr. Baburam Bhattarai suggested NC President Koirala for changing the current government into a national consensus government, and urged the NC to join in the current government for some time. In the letter, the Prime Minister also proposed to hold elections to a new CA within the coming May, making necessary constitutional and legal arrangements for the same, building an environment of trust by making appointments to the constitutional bodies, and moving ahead by concluding the remaining works related to the peace process through a consensus, according to the RSS news posted on thehimalayantimes.com.

The Election Commission has called on all political parties to make necessary legal arrangements at the earliest, so that elections could take place in Baisakh (April-May). At an all party-meeting held at the EC office in Kathmandu today, the commission said that parties need to make a deal on setting a date for the election, on appointing commissioners to the constitutional body, and amending the constitution and the laws, soon, according to the nepalnews.com.
