Local Election In Two Phases

KTM Metro Reporter

April 23, 2017

The Cabinet meeting held today decided to hold the local election in two phases: election in provinces such as 3, 4, and 6 will be held as scheduled on May 14, and in 1, 2, 5 and 7 on June 14 so that the demands of the Madheshi and ethnic leaders could be met through the amendment to the constitution adopting a fast-track process, and opened up the door to the dissident politicians to participate in the election instead of protesting against the election.

Before the cabinet meeting, Prime Minister Prachanda consulted with the Election Commission on holding the election in two phases. Obviously, the EC was ready for holding the elections in two phases as the political leaders had reached the agreement on it.

Prime Minister Prachanda also briefed the opposition leader: CPN-UML Chairman KP Oli on the amendment to the constitution for meeting the demands of the Madheshi and ethnic leaders, and on holding the local election in two phases.

Quoting the PM’s Secretariat, the news on thehimalayantimes.com stated that two sides agreed on amending the constitution to meet the following demands:

-       Increase the number of constituencies and local levels in Tarai-Madhesh region based on the population density;

-       Resolve the issues of provincial boundaries through a powerful federal commission;

-       Include Language Commission’s recommendation on the official languages in the constitution’s schedule;

-       Move ahead with the proposal on citizenship that the government has presented in the Parliament.

If nothing goes wrong overnight, the dissident politicians would participate in the local election, and the country will have the powerful local governments following the constitution in two months.
