December 2, 2013: The Nepal Food Corporation (NFC) had decided to open its depots at three places of the Kailali district to purchase the rice from the local farmers at fair prices; however, NFC had failed to purchase the rice causing the farmers to sell their rice to local traders at the lower prices than set by the NFC in Kailai, according to the news on RSS news on ‘gorkhapatraonline.com.’

A farmer of Gadriya-6, Belauni, Som Lal Dangaura said that the NFC did not purchase their rice, they had to sell it to the local traders at a low price. “It is their price. They gave us Rs. 1600 per 100kg of rice,” he said. Other farmers have said that they have sold at the rice less than Rs. 1500 for per 100kg.

The NFC had formed a Committee to buy the rice setting minimum prices for different varieties. The NFC has set Rs. 1625 per 100kg of coarse rice, Rs. 1650 per 100kg of medium grade rice and Rs. 1725 per 100 kg of Mansuli rice.

The Chief of NFC Dhangadhi said that though they had decided to open three depots in the district, they could not implement it on time. “As we did not receive any direction from the central office, we could not buy rice here in the district,” he said.
