Conference on Nepal’s Hydropower Development

Issue 39, September 28, 2008

By KTM Metro Reporter in Kathmandu

On Tuesday, September 23, 2008, Independent Power Producers’ Association of Nepal (IPPAN), Power Trade Corporation of India (PTC) and Nepal-India Chamber of Commerce and Industry (NICCI) jointly started a conference on developing the power potential in Nepal for the benefits of both Nepal and India.

The discussion on developing Nepal’s power potential for selling in India is not a new. It has been going on for a number of years but the development of hydropower potential for the benefits of both Nepal and India has been far from materializing it.

The main snag has been that India is the only market for the sale of the hydropower developed in Nepal. Naturally, Indians want to buy the hydropower power at their price not at the sellers’ price. So, the price offered was not in favor of developing hydropower in Nepal.
