Using Democratic Rights For Most Undemocratic Purposes
By KTM Metro Reporter
June 8, 2012: the NC and CPN-UML leaders along with the small political parties using the democratic rights to protest today held a mass rally for the most undemocratic purpose of protesting against the fresh elections called by the president on the recommendation of the prime minister to a new Constituent Assembly (CA). They have been at a mass rally held at Tundikhel in Kathmandu today until late evening to show their strength and condemn the elections to a new CA. They would have been better off to demonstrate their strength at the polls rather than at the rally ferrying so many people into Tundikhel at a massive cost to the parties and to the nation.
These opposition political leaders have charged Prime Minister Baburam Bhattarai with moving ahead in a unilateral and unconstitutional way, and warned him of removing him from the office. Speaking at the mass rally held at Tundikhel, the leaders of NC and CPN-UML tirelessly spent their precious time on bashing the UCPN-Maoist and the Bhattarai government.
Speaking at the mass rally, President of NC Sushil Koirala said that the UCPN-Maoist leaders have behaved like despotic disregarding the need for collective decisions to be taken; so, his party would act accordingly to tackle the activities of the Maoist party.
Similarly, Chairman of CPN-UML Jhalanath Khanal said that the Maoists have aspired to impose an autocratic rule going against the aspirations of Nepalis for crafting a new constitution; and he firmly told that the government would not be able to hold elections in the current political situation.
Vice-president of NC Ram Chandra Poudel said that the UCPN-Maoist dissolved the Constituent Assembly (CA) even though other options were available just to continue in power.
Senior NC leader Sher Bahadur Deuba repeated his demand for the resignation of Prime Minister Bhattarai for paving the way for a national consensus government.
Former Pancha leaders such as Lokendra Bahadur Chanda, Pashupati Shumsher Rana, and Surya Bahadur Thapa were at the mass rally to speak out for the NC and CPN-UML leaders. Speaking at the rally, Mr. Rana pleased NC and CPN-UML leaders stating the dissolution of the CA went against democracy; so, the campaign was to save democracy and to remove the Bhattarai government from office.
Thousands of cadres belonging to various political parties brought to Tundikhel to participate in a mass rally held to protest the so-called unilateral announcement of fresh elections to a new CA and force Prime Minister Baburam Bhattarai to quit the office. NC and CPN-UML leaders believed that more than 100,000 people participated in the rally. Anybody could guess how many millions of rupees have been spent on transporting this number of people back and forth between Tundikhel and their homes.
At the press conference held on the eve of holding a mass rally in Kathmandu, President of NC Sushil Koirala said that the declaration of the new election was against democratic norms and values and added that the government steps were meant to capture the state powers and resources, and urged all democratic forces to unite and fight against the declaration of the new election and non-democratic activities of the government, ‘The Rising Nepal’ of today reports.
At the same press conference, leaders of NC and CPN-UML said that the next CA election was impossible and alleged that the Prime Minister invited a serious constitutional crisis declaring the fresh elections.
Advocates such as Bhojraj Acharya, Dhana Bahadur Shrestha and Gyan Prasad Khanal and others filed a writ petition at the Supreme Court yesterday demanding the reinstatement of the Constituent Assembly and invalidation of the fresh elections to a new CA scheduled for November 22, ‘The Rising Nepal’ of today writes. They appealed to the court for reinstating the CA for one day and the legislature-parliament until the next parliamentary elections were held.
