Girija’s Saying About Democracy and Federalism

Issue 33, August 16, 2009

By KTM Metro Reporter in Kathmandu

On Sunday, August 9, 2009, speaking at the function held to celebrate the 17th anniversary of the Democracy Promotion Center in Kathmandu, Nepali Congress (NC) President Girija Prasad Koirala has said that the survival of the political parties will be in crisis and the dictatorship will flourish if the decision on the federalism is made based on the ethnicity. NC President Koirala claimed to be the democratic has made his actions so far the most undemocratic. For example, he has masterminded the ceremonial President’s action on directly writing a letter to the Chief of Army Staff forcing the President who has taken the oath of safeguarding the Constitution to violate the Interim Constitution of Nepal of 2007; next thing the most undemocratic thing he did was he appointed Madhav Nepal defeated in two constituencies to the Position of Prime Minister shaming on all the democratic minded Nepalis. NC President has never been for federalism so it is not surprising that he came out against it. Certainly, his party will have the difficulty in surviving if its leader such as Koirala insists on against federalism in Nepal.
