University Teachers Oppose Appointments of Vice-chancellors

Issue 33, August 14, 2011

By KTM Metro Reporter

August 10, 2011: the university teachers belonging to the so-called democratic teachers’ association and Nepal National Teachers’ Association have padlocked the universities protesting the appointments of vice-chancellors to the seven-universities, ‘Gorkhapatra’ of today writes.

Nepalis have been sick with the protests and opposition although protesting and opposing are the two fundamental rights of humans. Anybody protesting against or opposing anything must follow the rule of law then it will be the exercise of fundamental human rights but in Nepal nobody follows the rule but shows the strength. If you are strong enough you can bully the law. For example, the NC lawmakers have been holding the House hostage but the Speakers has not done anything against them whereas a small number of lawmakers belonging to insignificant political parties when attempted to do just what the NC lawmakers have been doing, the Speaker removed them from the House hall forcibly and suspended the for a week. This is the rule of law prevailing in Nepal.

Obviously, the university teachers have the backing of some political parties particularly the NC; so they have padlocked the universities. We don’t know whether these guys will be able to force the government to reverse the decision on appointing the vice-chancellors remains to be seen but they are certainly doing damage to the teachings and the victims are surely the students. Who cares?
