January 13, 2013: the Democratic Lawyers Association (DLA) and the Nepal Press Union (NPU) today filed a writ against Prime Minister Dr. Baburam Bhattarai, Attorney General Mukti Pradhan and other top government officials accusing them of the contempt of court for their alleged intervention in the criminal prosecution of accused killers of journalist Dekendra Thapa in Dailekh in 2004, according to THT ONLINE news of today. The petitioners have claimed that the Interim Constitution of Nepal has not granted any right to the prime minister and the attorney general to stop the investigation into any criminal case; so, they argued that the Article 131 of the constitution has been abused.

Referring to the murder of journalist Dekendra Thapa in Dailekh in 2004, the chief political advisor to the Prime Minister, Devendra Paudel today warned the opposition parties of the government not keeping quiet if they took to agitation over, what he said, an individual’s murder, according to the THT ONLINE news of today. The incidents of such killings during the decade-long insurgency should be dealt with through the Truth and Reconciliation Commission, according to the political advisor. Concerning the PM’s alleged order to halt the investigation into the alleged murders in Dailekh, political advisor Paudel said that the Maoists laid down arms following the comprehensive peace agreement, and the Prime Minister and Attorney General would not remain silent over the activities that are against the peace process.

Holding a press conference on the sideline of the ongoing seventh national convention of the CPN-Maoist at Pragya Bhawan in Kathmandu yesterday, the Dailekh district organization committee district in-charge Ram Lal Biswokarma said that the party disagreed with what the media have been reporting on the journalist’s murder case. Reading out a press statement, Dailekh district committee secretary Gajendra Rai said the arrests have seriously violated the Comprehensive Peace Accord, which has made provisions for probing such cases through the Truth and Reconciliation Commission, according to ‘HIMALAYAN NEWS SERVICE’.

Speaking at an interaction held by Television Editors’ Guild Kathmandu yesterday, editors and senior journalists demanded the arrest of Prime Minister Baburam Bhattarai and Attorney General Mukti Pradhan for their ‘irresponsible’ directives to Office of District Attorney, Dailekh and police to halt investigation into the suspects of the killers of journalist Dekendra Thapa, HIMALAYAN NEWS SERVICE reported yesterday.
