File Videotape: A Hot Topic

Issue 19, May 10, 2009

By KTM Metro Reporter in Kathmandu

The file videotape in which on January 02, 2008, Maoist Leader Prachanda was shown addressing the third division of the People’s Liberation Army (PLA) has been the hot topic in Nepal. All private TVs have been showing the video.

In the videotape, Prachanda has stated that the Maoists’ movement has been important not only from the national point of view but also from the international point, the number of PLA has been inflated, and if need be they would capture the State power.

On May 6, 2009, speaking to the anchor of the program called ‘Antar Sambad’ of the State-run Radio Nepal, Maoist leader Barshaman Pun said that at that time the election for a Constituent Assembly was uncertain and some quarters were attempting to return the king, so, the opinions expressed by Prachanda was timely; however, currently, some people have been copying the videotape and distributing it even to the diplomatic missions in Kathmandu in an attempt to prove the Maoists are terrorists and need to drive them to jungle again; however, the Maoists have been working on establishing the suzerainty of the people.

The news in the State-run newspaper ‘Gorkhapatra’ of May 6, 2009 stated that the spokesman for the United Communist Party of Nepal-Maoist (UCPN-Maoist) Dinanath Sharma in a statement said that certain elements not wanting to have the suzerainty of the people have distributed the unrelated ‘file tape’ in a planned manner coinciding the current political crisis to provoke the people and then end the peace process; however, he said’ “we are committed to the Peace Agreement, the army integration, crating a new people’s constitution, to be accountable to the people and to the political ideals.”

Some political analysts say it is natural that any political party attempts to capture the state power; the NC has been obstructing the parliamentary sessions to pull down the government dubbed as ‘a ripen mango’ by former Prime Minister Girija Prasad Koirala, that will fall on its own weight; now it has fallen; the NC can enjoy it.
