Petroleum Entrepreneurs Warn of Protest

By KTM Metro Reporter

The Himalayan Times of September 18, 2007 reported that on Monday, September 17, Nepal petroleum entrepreneurs warned of staging protest rallies if the Nepal Government introduced a dual price system for petroleum products, as such a system for the sale of kerosene did not work in the past. The Chairperson of the petroleum entrepreneurs said, “Nepal has been facing a shortage of petroleum products because Nepal is not purchasing the products due to financial problem.” He stressed the need for implementing the Petroleum Bill at the earliest. He said, “The government's statement of the adjustment of the price of petroleum products affects the CA polls is false. If the lack of petroleum products continues, it will disrupt the polls." He said that there would be no shortage of petroleum products if Nepal Oil Corporation's monopoly over the distribution and sale of petroleum products ended.

The KTM Metro Reporter believes that the shortage of petroleum products in Nepal is the creation of the Government headed by the Nepali Congress Party President Girija Prasad Koirala for making money for the upcoming election for a Constituent Assembly, as the middle men continue to sell petrol at high prices to consumers in a parallel market in Kathmandu. The government is not for increasing the prices of petrol even when the Kathmandu consumers are ready to pay high price if the shortage of petrol ends.
