Learn Alphabets and Be Literate

Issue 03, January 18, 2009

By KTM Metro Reporter in Kathmandu

Prime Minister Prachandad launched a literacy campaign with the slogan “Learn Alphabets and Be Literate” inaugurating the campaign in Bhaktapur on January 14, 2009. Speaking at the inauguration program, the Prime Minister said that we would not be able to build a new Nepal without making all Nepalis literate.

According to the government statistics, currently Nepal has 7.8 million illiterate people. The government’s target is to make 2.6 millions literate at the cost of Rs 1.04 billions this year alone.

Non-formal education experts say that it is not impossible but the process needs to be right one to make it successful. Previous government also had attempted similar programs in the past but the government did not succeed it, as the people did not own it. So, the government needs to let the people at the grassroots level do it rather than the government people going down and doing the program. In addition, all political parties need to be involved in this program to make it successful.

The government has set up a high level committee chaired by the Prime Minister and then committees at various levels and one each at the village ward and three each at each municipal ward to hold literate classes. The government has delegated authority to the local committees to select paid volunteers for holding literacy classes.
The government has produced non-formal education materials in six languages such as Maithali, Abadhi, Bhojpuri, Tamang, Doteli and Nepali.

As it is only for learning alphabets and some numerical, the government might declare it successful. It however would create jobs for more than 100,000 thousands young SLC graduates.
