January 26, 2011: Joint Secretary to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Government of Nepal Dhananjay Jha, and Ambassador and Head of European Union Delegation to Nepal Dr. Alexander Spachis have signed the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on the Multi-Annual Indicative Program (MIP) for the period 2011-2013 on January 25, 2011.

Following the MoU, the EU will contribute Euro 60 million (nearly Rs 6 billion) to the three sectors such as education, support to stability and peace building, trade and economic capacity building according to a press release issued by the delegation of the EU to Nepal, ‘The Rising Nepal’ of January 26, 2011 writes.

"The EU has been keenly monitoring recent developments in the peace and constitution drafting process. The signing of the MoU is a further reaffirmation of its commitment to give continuity to its development cooperation initiatives with the Government of Nepal," Dr. Spachis said.

The development partnership between the EU and the Government of Nepal has been developed following the EC-Nepal Cooperation Agreement of 1996. Nepal receives the development assistance following "Development Cooperation Agreement". Its main objective is the poverty alleviation.

The development programs have been designed to help Nepal achieve the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs). They are for promoting the good governance and human rights in Nepal and strengthening relationship between the European Commission and Nepal, in addition to for integrating the Nepalese economy into the global economy.

Both the Country Strategy Paper and the MIP are made following the "European Consensus on Development" and the Declaration on Aid Effectiveness adopted in Paris in 2005.
