Objecting The Payment Of Rs 200,00 To Disqualified Combatants

Issue 45, November 1, 2012

By KTM Metro Reporter

November 1, 2012: in a statement issued in Kathmandu today, Chairman of CPN-UML Jhalanath Khanal condemned the government's decision on providing each disqualified former Maoist combatant with Rs. 200,000 stating it was a clear example of misuse of the state fund. After the verification, the then United Nations Mission in Nepal (UNMIN) had declared them disqualified based on their age at the time of joining the People’s Liberation Army.

Chairman Khanal made it clear that this decision would cost the government Rs. 600 million to pay some 3,000 disqualified combatants from the state treasury to meet the political interest of the concerned party, so urged the government to revoke the decision.

Chairman Khanal also said that the decision went against the international conventions, the Comprehensive Peace Accord reached between the Maoists and the government as well as an agreement between the government and United Nations Mission in Nepal (UNMIN).
