Terai Shutdowns Continue

Issue 08, February 24, 2008

BY KTM Metro Reporter in Kathmandu

Indefinite strikes called by the United Democratic Madheshi Front continued causing shutdowns in Terai. Most of the major Terai towns such as Biratnagar, Birgunj, and Nepalgunj have been under the curfew imposed by the local administration to stop violence. Some people opposed to the strikes have managed to open the business and traffic in eastern Terai.

The Kathmandu Valley has been facing the short supply of petroleum products. However, the short supply has been continuing already for a year. So, it seems that the short supply of petroleum products is rather the making of the government than of the ongoing strikes in Terai. The government claimed that a few tankers carrying petrol, diesel and kerosene have reached Kathmandu. The short supply of petroleum product combined with the eight-hour power cut a day has been severely adversely affecting all sorts of businesses in the Kathmandu Valley.

Most of the short distance commuters have started walking rather than waiting for crowded vehicles. Long distance commuters have been riding on the rooftops of buses putting their lives at risk.
