Contractor Bharati Sent To Jail

July 30, 2011: after the preliminary hearings yesterday on the corruption case filed by the Commission on Investigation into Abuse of Authority (CIAA), the bench comprising justices Gauri Bahadur Karki, Om Prakash Mishra and Kedar Prasad Chalise of the Special Court has asked contractor Shambhu Bharati involved in the irregularities in the purchase of armored vehicles and other materials required for the UN Nepalese Peace-keeping Mission in Dafur, Sudan, for the bail amount of Rs 150 million, and sent him to jail for not depositing the bail amount. Bharati is the local agent of London-based Assured Risks Ltd that has supplied substandard vehicles and materials.

The bench also has asked the Ministry of Foreign affairs to seize the passport of Mr. Bharati if it has been issued; if not, not to issue any passport to him. In view of the open border between Nepal and India, and the possibility of Bharati leaving the country, the bench also has asked the Ministry of Home to restrict the movement of Bharati to the Kathmandu Valley, ‘Gorkhapatra’ of today writes.

The CIAA has charged Contractor Bharati with the involvement in causing irregularities in purchasing the armored vehicles and materials required for the UN Nepalese Peace-keeping Mission in Darfur, Sudan, and in causing the loss of Rs 290 million in purchasing the substandard armored vehicle and materials in cooperation with the police officers.
