PAC Questions Prime Minister Again

Issue 15, April 11, 2010

By KTM Metro Reporter in Kathmandu

April 5, 2010: the Public Account Committee (PAC) has questioned Prime Minister Madhav Nepal about his government awarding the contract of the printing of machine-readable passports (MRPs) to the Indian government-owned company defying the instructions of the PAC to follow the rules and regulations of awarding contract of the printing of MRPs.

Prime Minister Madhav Nepal has said that he would like to honor the instructions of the PAC but he has been so short of time he needed to award the printing of the MRPs to the Indian company. The members of the PAC are not satisfied with the answers of the Prime Minister. They are going to question him again.

Prime Minister Madhav Nepal has cancelled the international bids called for printing of MRPs on January 15, 201o and then has engaged in the fishy business of awarding the printing of machine-readable passports (MRPs) to the Indian company defying the instructions of the Public Account Committee to award the printing of MRPs to the least bidder following the Financial Rules and Regulations.

Some politicians have been nervous of the current government awarding the printing of MRPs to the Indian government-owned company, as the Indian intelligence agency could easily track them down. Some of them have already felt insecure.
