Indefinite Shutdown in Nepal Terai

Issue 07, February 17, 2008

By KTM Metro Reporter in Kathmandu

Kathmandu, Feb 14: The Madheshi Nepalis have called for an indefinite shutdown in the Nepal Terai for forcing the Government of Nepal to meet their six-point demand. The demands are: autonomy to the Madhesh, proportional representation of Madheshi community on the constituent assembly, proportional representation of Madheshis in the state administration, police and army, bringing the armed groups of the Terai into mainstream politics, declaring martyrs the 45 individuals killed in the Madhesh movement and providing their families with compensation, and treatment to the injured people. They believe that if the government holds the election for a CA without meeting their demands the election will not be meaningful. The shutdown in Terai has affected the regular life all over Nepal. The SPA Steering Committee has set up a special task force to talk to the leaders of the Madheshi movement. However, they have not held a talk so far. Similarly, the ethnic Nepalis (Limbus) in the eastern Nepal have called for shutdown in the eastern Nepal.
