Completing The Peace Process and The Constitution Writing

Issue 07, February 12, 2012

By KTM Metro Reporter

February 8, 2012: leaders of UCPN-Maoist, CPN-UML and NC are holding a meeting at the Gokarna Resort today at 8:00 AM to discuss the ongoing peace process, constitution writing and formation of a national consensus government to break the current political deadlock, ‘The Rising Nepal’ of today writes.

However, a meeting of the Constitutional Committee (CC) held yesterday had failed to discuss the disputed issues concerning a new constitution, as members of the opposition parties focused on the demand for revoking the government’s decision on legalizing the property deals made by the Revolutionary Council (RC) of the Maoists during the insurgency.

Talking to journalists at his office in Singh Durbar, Information and Communications Minister Jaya Prakash Prasad Gupta yesterday said that the Madheshi people would rebel against implementing the report of the State Restructuring Commission (SRC), and demanded to enforce the 22-point and 8-point agreements the government had reached with the Madheshis during the Madhesh movements, ‘The Rising Nepal’ of today writes.

Dalit leaders and Constituent Assembly (CA) members belonging to NC accused the State Restructuring Commission (SRC) of making the provision for a non-territorial province for the Dalit community, and recommended federal states reflecting multi-ethnic, multi-lingual, multi-cultural and geographical diversity rather than following the ethnic line, ‘The Rising Nepal’ of today writes.

Speaking at an interaction held by Dhankuta chapter of Nepal Press Union, President of NC Sushil Koirala yesterday said that if the UCPN-Maoist honestly implemented the earlier deals, the national tasks of peace and constitution would be concluded within seven days, ‘The Rising Nepal’ of today writes. He also said that his party would never approve the government’s decision on legalizing the Maoists’ Revolutionary Council’s property deals done during the insurgency. He also said that his party would always be against the practice of seizing properties of the ordinary people and then giving it the legal status.

Speaking at an interaction event hoisted by the Reporters’ Club at the CPN-UML Parliamentary Party Office, Singha Durbar, Chairman of CPN-UML Jhalanath Khanal yesterday said that the current government led by Prime Minister Dr. Baburam Bhattarai would not be a national unity government, as the government had completely failed to move forward the peace process and the constitution writing, ‘The Rising Nepal’ of today writes.
