Kapilvastu in Perpetual Closure

Issue 40, October 07, 2007

By KTM Metro Reporter

The local administration had imposed curfew in the Kapilvastu district for several days to control the violence erupted on September 16, 2007 after the death of a man called Mohit Khan – former royal agent and the chief of the vigilante group supported and armed by the then king’s government to fight against the insurgents.

Victims of the weeklong violence in the Kapilvasu district have imposed enforced closure of bazaars, educational institutions and industries in the district for drawing the attention of the government to their demands for compensation and rehabilitation of the displaced people.

At least 30 people were killed, hundreds were injured and thousands were displaced, hundreds of houses and small stores were burned to ashes during the weeklong violence in the Kapilvastu district.

Human rights groups visiting the violence-affected areas found that the local administration and police agencies could have checked the loss of lives and property if they had acted promptly and seriously to contain the violence. They also asked the government to provide relief materials to the people in the affected areas. However, the government has not listen to anybody so far.
