Construction Of India-Nepal Oil Pipeline Uncertain

Issue 50, December 11, 2011

By KTM Metro Reporter

December 8, 2011: The future of the proposed 100-crore oil pipeline project between India and Nepal, that would reduce fuel transportation cost by an estimated 40%, continues to be uncertain due to funding issues, ‘The Economic Times’ of India writes yesterday.

The project is to connect the Indian Oil Corporation's depot in Raxaul, India to Amlekhgunj in Nepal. It would reduce the cost of transportation of oil from India to Nepal by 40%. It was the brainchild of the Indian Oil Corporation (IOC) and proposed it to Nepal in 1995. Both the government of Nepal and India had approved it but the shortage of funding had delayed it to implement according to the news in ‘The Economic Times.

Currently, oil tankers transport petroleum product from Raxual to Nepal causing evaporation loss and additional cost of uploading and downloading petroleum products.
