August 21, 2013: Commission on Investigation into Abuse of Authority (CIAA) arrested Executive Director Rameswor Yadav along with former and incumbent officials such as former Executive Director Dr Giwandra Jha, former General Manager Chiranjivi Sharma Poudel, former Deputy Executive Director Tika Ram BC, former coordinator of Electricity Development Project Mahesh Prasad Acharya, Planning Chief of Nepal Electricity Authority (NEA) Krishna Bahadur Thapa, Engineer Promod Rijal, Level 11 Officer Dev Sharma Poudel, and Accountant Sushil Prasad Khanal for investigation in the irregularities in the purchase of billions of rupees worth of transformers from a Chinese company between 2007 and 2011, according to the news in ‘gorkhapatra’ of today.

After the transformers did not work as they should, and leakage of electricity has been high, an investigation into the transformers was done three years ago. The investigators reported that the aluminum coils were found instead of copper coils in the transformers. Such low quality transformers had caused the leakage of electrity to the tune of 1.3 million units per month.

Through the global bidding, NEA had purchased about 2,000 transformers of the capacities of 25, 50, 100, 200, and 300 from a Chinese company. Majority of the transformers are low quality, and low capacity. They blew up frequently, and caused high electricity leakage, according to the tests done at the Hetauda laboratory.
