On May 17, 2009, the United Communist Party of Nepal-Maoist has held mass rallies in Kathmandu, Biratnagar, Dhangadi and Nepalgunj protesting the President’s unconstitutional act of directly writing a letter to the Chief of Army Staff Rukmangad Katuwal fired by the government ordering him to stay on in job.
The Maoists have been telling the public that they have been holding such mass rallies to ensure the civil supremacy over the army.
The Maoist members of parliament have been obstructing the parliamentary sessions demanding the President take back his unconstitutional step of directly writing a letter to the Chief of Army Staff.
Addressing the mass rally in Kathmandu, Maoist Chairman Prachanda has said, “the reactionary forces have been dreaming to make Maoist LTTE and Prachanda Prabhakaran; to provoke Maoists and bring out the Maoist combatants from the cantonments; bring foreign forces and make Nepal a Afghanistan; however, we will not allow to happen it; we have fought for a Constituent Assembly, for republic and now we are fighting for suzerainty of people; so, we will write a constitution and complete the peace process.”
