Firing Deputy Prime Minister For Abuse Of Authority
By KTM Metro Reporter
March 31, 2011: the Nepali Congress legislators have taken the parliamentary session hostage today for the ransom of reinstating the secretary to the ministry of finance that has resigned in a dispute with the deputy prime minister holding the portfolio of the finance ministyr over the defaulters of value-added tax (VAT).
Deputy Prime Minister holding the portfolio of the finance ministry Bharat Mohan Adhikari has put pressure on the secretary to the finance ministry for covering up the VAT defaulters obviously for his benefits whereas the secretary has been for taking strong legal actions against the persons defaulting billions of rupees worth of VAT.
The NC legislators holding the parliamentary session hostage has charged Prime Minister with allowing his deputy firing the secretary that has been for making investigation into the VAT defaulters and then taking strong legal actions against them. Obviously, Prime Minister and his deputy have been for not pushing the investigation into the VAT defaulters making it clear that they must have made a deal with the VAT defaulters.
The legislators will be well off asking the Commission on Investigation into Abuse of Authority (CIAA) for taking up this case rather than taking the parliamentary session hostage. CIAA could immediately suspend the deputy prime minister and then hold an investigation into the case of the abuse of authority.
The international community in Kathmandu has concerned with the firing of the secretary to finance ministry that has been working hard to stop the corruption and stop evading taxes. The action of deputy prime minister on firing the secretary has been clearly the blow to the measures against curbing corruption and collecting revenues following the rules and regulations.
“I am writing to express concern at widespread reports in media questioning the government’s commitment to vigorously fight corruption and its willingness to pursue the revenue collection measures necessary to finance Nepal’s urgent development needs,” Sarah Sanyahumbi, Head of the UK Department for International Development, has written to Prime Minister Khanal on behalf of the donor agencies in Kathmandu according to the news posted on the Asiantribune.com.
At the same time, the state employees’ union has put forward its demand for reinstating the secretary to the finance ministry immediately. In a press statement, the chief of the union has said that the secretary to the finance ministry is one of the honest state employees, and has warned the government of the entire state employees will protest against firing the honest high official for being honest and for taking the actions against the tax evaders.
The current government of Prime Minister Jhalanath Khanal will not be much different from the moist corrupt government of former Prime Minister Madhav Nepal that had accumulated enough money for staying in power running his party with the money he has illegally accumulated for decades to come.
So, we demand the CIAA immediately step in this issue and suspend the deputy prime minister for abusing his authority for covering up the VAT defaulters and firing the most honest secretary to the finance ministry that has been acting for taking actions against the VAT defaulters for increasing the resources required for the development.
