Brothers And Sisters Swapping Blessing With Each Others

Issue 44, October 30, 2011

By KTM Metro Reporter

October 28, 2011: today, Nepalese Hindus and Buddhists as well are celebrating ‘bhai-tika’ means blessing brothers but it is actually for brothers and sisters swapping blessing with each other and renewing the bonds of love between brothers and sisters.

Following the tradition either brothers visit sisters or sisters visit brothers and then sisters perform ’bhai-tika’. Each ethnic group has its own tradition of performing the ‘bhai-tika’ but the main philosophy of it is for sisters to wish brothers for long and prosperous lives, and brothers in turn wish sisters for prosperous lives.

Men not having sisters and women not having brothers visit Lord Yamlokesvore at ‘Ranipokhari’ in Kathmandu to receive blessing from the lord for long and prosperous lives. This shrine to Lord Yamlokesvore is opened once a year on this particular day for the people to visit.

At the public place called ‘Kasthamandup’ in Kathmandu, a lady called Anjali is performing ‘bhai-tika’ to anybody wishes for receiving blessing from her in public. She has been performing ‘bhai-tika’ at her own cost but not taking any presents or cash from the participants. Anybody can sign up for participating in ‘bhai-tika’ she performs but anybody if misses to sign up, can simply walk in and sit cross-legged with other participants in ‘bhai-tika’. Foreign visitors also participate in this public ‘bhai-tika’. Anjali simply wants to perform ‘bhai-tika’ to all brothers and bless them for long and prosperous lives and in return she receives love and blessings from the brothers.
