Indian Reactions To MRP Printing

Issue 16, April 18, 2010

By KTM Metro Reporter in Kathmandu

April 14, 2010:  Indian Ambassador Rakesh Soodh has met with Prime Minister Madhav Nepal and convey the message of the disappointment of India to the termination of the contract for printing four million machine-readable passports (MRPs) in India on April 13, 2010. The ambassador also has regretted that the confidential correspondences between Nepal and India have been published.

Under the intense pressure of the Public Accounts Committee (PAC) for calling competitive bids, and of the opposition parties to annul the contract for printing MRPs given to India, the Madhav government has terminated the contract for printing four million machine-readable passports (MRPs) in India given to the Indian government-owned company without calling competitive bids.

Indian embassy in a statement released in Kathmandu has said, ‘It is a matter of regret that the issue has been politicized in Nepal and confidential communication from the embassy has been publicized. The government of India remains committed to strengthening India-Nepal relations which have withstood the test of time.”
