Bills On Truth And Reconciliation, And Enforced Disappearances

April 28, 2012: A delegation of the Society of families of the people forcibly disappeared by the State has called on Prime Minister Dr Baburam Bhattarai and urged him not to take back the Enforced Disappearance (Offense and Punishment) Bill from the Parliament, ‘The Rising Nepal’ of today writes quoting the state news agency RSS.

Recently, leaders of the major political parties have agreed on merging two Commissions such as Commission on Truth and Reconciliation, and Commission on Enforced Disappearance into a single commission. To this end the government has decided to withdraw one of the bills pending at the parliament.

National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has written a letter to the government objecting the cabinet decision on withdrawing one of the bills on commission concerning the enforced disappearance and their families, and also objecting the decision of the political parties on merging the two important commissions into a single commission.

Similarly, the international human rights organizations have written to the Nepalese prime minister opposing the government’s decision on taking back the bill on Enforced Disappearance and the political parties agreeing to merge the two bills into a single one.
