Free Appointment of Chief Justice

On August 25, 2009, the Constitutional Committee on Judiciary has decided by the majority votes to make the constitutional provision for appointing the Chief of Justice of the Supreme Court of Nepal from among the most eligible legal practitioners breaking the tradition of appointing the Chief Justice from among the justices of the Supreme Court of Nepal.
Members of the Constitutional Committee on Judiciary belonging to the United Communist Party of Nepal-Maoist, Madheshi People’s Rights Forum and other political parties have voted for it whereas the members of the Nepali Congress and Communist Party of Nepal-Unified Marxist and Leninist have voted against it.
