Nepalese Vice-president acted as a Petty Political Leader

Issue 46, November 16, 2008

BY KTM Metro Reporter in Kathmandu

Finding no provision made in the Interim constitution for specific tasks assigned to the Nepalese Vice-president, the first Vice-president of the Himalayan Republic, Mr. Parmananda Jha as one of the petty political leaders has been launching his own political campaign delivering his political opinions to the public and meeting with foreign envoys and so on.

He came to the conclusion that the Special Committee set up by the government was unconstitutional. He was a legal expert; he had served a number of years in the Nepalese judiciary; unfortunately, he got involved in one of the scandals and resigned from the so noble public service.

Recently, Vice President Parmananda Jha said that making provision for party whips in the Constituent Assembly would violate the people's fundamental rights and if the Constituent Assembly would craft a constitution on majority votes then people would not own it.

He also complained that the government had not enforced the agreement reached between the former government and the United Madheshi Democratic Front. However, Mr. Vice-president failed to understand that he was a part of the government and the failure of the government meant his failure, too.

Vice-president Parmananda Jha was happy to be engaged even in opening a motorcycle rally held by one of the religious non-governmental organizations in Biratnagar, eastern Nepal.

One correct thing Vice-president Jha said was he would protect the Constitution. Every Nepali is responsible for protecting the Constitution; the Vice-president is more responsible than anybody else; however, going beyond the constitution, nobody could protect it. Some political leaders including the party of the Vice-president have said that whatever the Vice-president has been saying in public go beyond the constitution, and asked him to stop from doing such things.
