Demand for Rise in Salaries of State Employees

Issue 29, July 19, 2009

By KTM Metro Reporter in Kathmandu

Nepalese state employees have continued to stage a rally at the forbidden areas of the government secretariat on July 16, 2009 demanding the rise in their salaries. Talks between the representatives of Finance Ministry and the representatives of the protesting state employees have ended inconclusively. They have agreed to talk with the Finance Minister on Friday, July 17, 2009. The cabinet meeting has authorized the Finance Minister to talk to the representatives of the protesting state employees and make a decision on the salaries of the state employees.

In the budget speech, the Finance Minster has said that the government will provide the state employees with allowances rather than increase in salaries. However, the representatives of various state employees’ associations have been demanding the government to increase their salaries following the recommendations of the High-level Salary Commission.

Staffs of the state-owned corporations such as “Gorkhapatra Corporation” joined other protesting state employees demanding higher salaries. Other state employees have been preparing for joining in the protest against the government not increasing their salaries in the FY 2009 that starts on July 16, 2009.
