Vice-chairman Of UCPN-Maoist Elected To Prime Minister

Issue 35, August 28, 2011

By KTM Metro Reporter

August 29, 2011: the parliament has elected Vice-chairman of UCPN-Maoist Dr. Baburam Bhattarai to the office of prime minister yesterday. He is the fourth prime minister of Federal Democratic Republic of Nepal. He has received 340 votes out of 575 votes. His rival Ram Chandra Poudel of NC received 235 votes.

Dr. BHattarai has taken the oath of office of prime minister from the president today. Dr. Bhattarai in turn has sworn in Bijaya Gacchedar the office of deputy prime minister today.

His predecessor Jhalanath Khanal of CPN-UML has stayed in the office for seven months but doing nothing. He has been one of the most incompetent prime ministers in Nepal.

Nepalis have high hope of Dr. Bhattarai making work the peace process and the constitution writing. In fact, Dr. Bhattarai has told the reporters waiting at the entrance to the parliament yesterday that his three main priorities are the peace process, constitution writing and easing the lives of Nepalis.

Dr. Bhattarai is a bold personality but whether his opponents in the NC and CPN-UML would let him perform his duties or not. The main tool of the opposition in the parliament has been taking the House hostage for meeting their demands.

At about 9:00 PM yesterday, Indian Prime Minster Dr. Manmohan Singh made a direct telephone call to Dr. Bhattarai and congratulated him on the election to the office of prime minister indicating the support of the Indian Government for Dr. Bhattarai.

The support of all Madheshi political parties for Dr. Bhattarai has also indicated that unseen power has played a role in bringing all the splintered-political parties together for voting for Dr. Bhattarai.

Sharing in the ministerial portfolios published in ‘Gorkhapatra’ of today has indicated that the Madheshi political leaders not the Maoists have come to power. All the major ministerial portfolios such as Home, and Defense are allocated to the Madheshi leaders.

Lawmakers of Nepal Workers’ and Peasants’ Party have boycotted the election to prime minister yesterday stating foreign power has been interfering in the politics of Nepal.
