January 28, 2011: stating it has already submitted suggestions to various taskforce formed earlier concerning the issue, the Nepal Army (NA) has written a letter to the Ministry of Defense today saying no need for putting its representatives on the high-level taskforce set up following the instruction of Defense Minister Bidhya Bhandari for managing and regulating the Welfare Fund, myrepublica.com writes

“We had accepted the ministry’s request to send our representatives. However, the issue of sending representatives depends on coordination between the ministry and the headquarters. Hence, we had decided not to send our representatives now,” said Brigadier General Purna Chandra Thapa, Chief of Directorate of Welfare Schemes, at a press meet held at the Army headquarters.

Concerning the question of the transparency of the fund, Brigadier General Thapa has said that the NA has been following the guidelines of Nepal Rastra Bank for depositing the fund in various financial institutions, however, about Rs 490 million deposited in various such institutions remain at risk.
