Does NC’s Stay in Government, and CPN-UML’s not staying makes difference?

Issue 16, April 20, 2008

By KTM Metro Reporter in Kathmandu

On April 17, in a meeting presided over by the Prime Minister, and held at his official residence at Baluwatar, Kathmandu, the Nepali Congress (NC) has decided to remain in the government. Many opportunists in the NC want the Prime Minister to pull out of the government with the anticipation of making the Maoists the future situation unmanageable. However, logically thinking Congress leaders have said that the Prime Minister has also been officiating as the Head of State, so, pulling out of the government would be irresponsible act of the NC without making the provision for handing over the power to the new government.

The CPN-UML has pulled all its members out of the Government ostensibly on the moral ground but might be for isolating the CPN-Maoist.

However, the Maoists prefer to keep the coalition government intact pursuant to the Interim Constitution of Nepal of 2007 with the powerful portfolios such as Defense, and Home in their hands.

The agreements the Government of Nepal has signed with various political parties including the CPN-Maoist are the guiding principles for crafting a new constitution of Nepal. So, crafting of the new constitution should not have many difficulties, as most of the basic principles have been already spelled out in various agreements the Government of Nepal has signed with the political parties. So, it would not make any difference in crafting the constitution of Nepal whether some political parties stay on or go out of the government.
