USAID Marks 60 Years Of Its Engagement In Nepal's Development

Issue 08, February 20, 2011

By KTM Metro Reporter

February 18, 2011: The US Agency for International Development in Nepal (USAID/Nepal) has marked its 60 years of engagement in the development activities of Nepal holding the photo exhibition of its activities at the Nepal Art Council in Kathmandu today.

USAID/N has published 468-page book titled “Half-a-century Of Development: The History Of US Assistance To Nepal, 1951-2001” in 2001. It describes how the US experts have struggled to help Nepalis develop their country. The snippet view of the book is posted on the Internet. Interested people could read it if the full view or even download of this book is allowed.

The US assistance to Nepal has started immediately after the US signed the assistance agreement with Nepal on January 23, 1951. The US increased its assistance after Nepalis removed the autocratic Rana family rule and set up democracy in February of the same year. Even after the death of multi-party democracy in 1960, and imposition of the no-party system called Panchayat by the then-king Mahendra, the assistance has continued. The US has once again increased its assistance after the Nepalis tore down the despotic Panchayat, and reinstated the multiparty democracy in 1990. Currently, the US assistance has been focused on institutionalizing the democratic institutions and completing the peace process and the writing of a new constitution in addition to other regular development activities.
