Issue 15, April 12, 2009

By KTM Metro Reporter in Kathmandu

Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of Nepal Kedar Prasad Giri met with Prime Minister Prachanda on Sunday, April 05, 2009. Chief Justice Giri said that he went to meet the Prime Minister to discuss the subject matters on the Judicial Council meeting. However, legal experts have opposed such a meeting of the Chief Justice with the Prime Minister at the time when two main controversial cases such as ‘appointments to the constitutional bodies’ and ‘not extending the term of eight brigadier generals’ are in the process of hearing at the Supreme Court.

On April 6, 2009, the fringe left parties have called the shutdown of Nepal to protest the federalization of Nepal. However, some political analysts said that it was actually for disrupting the mass rallies called by the Maoists. According to the latest news provided by the local media the shutdown was partially successful. The law enforcement people took some people trying to enforce shutdown into custody while some protestors vandalized some vehicles in Kathmandu and other parts of Nepal.
