Indian Foreign Minister’s Nepal Visit

On January 15, 2010, Indian Foreign Minister S M Krishna accompanied by a high-level delegation including Foreign Secretary Nirupama Rao has arrived at Kathmandu, Deputy Prime Minister holding the portfolio of foreign affairs Sujata Koirala has received him at the airport. Upon arrival at the international airport talking to the reporters, the Indian Foreign Minister has said that India gives a top priority to the relations between Nepal and India.
Soon after the arrival Foreign Minister Krishna met with Prime Minister Madhav Nepal and Deputy Prime Minister Sujata Koirala. He has discussed the issues such as the border security and smuggling of fake currency India has been facing. The Nepalese authorities have assured the Indian Foreign Minister of not letting the use of the Nepalese territory for any anti-India activity. Foreign Minister Krishna has said that India is ready to review the Nepal-India Treaty of 1950 following the current realities, and has also offered Indian assistance in the peace process and writing of a new constitution. In response to the Indian offer to review the Treaty of 1950, the Nepal side has said that consensus politics is required to this end.
Nepal and India have signed off four different Memoranda of Understanding (MoU). Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minster Sujata Koirala and Indian Foreign Minister Krishna have signed a MoU on strengthening the road infrastructure in the Tarai areas of Nepal. Other MoUs are on Indian support for the electrification of five village development committees in Rupandehi, and the agreement between Nepal Stock Exchange Limited and Central Depository Services (India) for the setting up a central depository and clearing and settlement system, and the setting up a Nepal-Bharat Maitri Learning Centre at Khumaltar in Lalitpur.
