Sale of Shares of Nepal Telecom

Issue 04, January 27, 2008

By KTM Reporter in Kathmandu

The state-owned telecommunication company called ‘Nepal Telecom’ has started selling its shares to its employees at Rs 90 per share and to the public at Rs 600 per share of the share having the face value of Rs 100 per share. Nobody knows what is the real market price of the shares of the ‘Nepal Telecom’.

According to the Nepalese legal experts, only the Ministry of Finance can sell the shares of the government-run-state companies. To do so, the Ministry of Finance needs to set up a team of experts to evaluate the share value and then set the market price of the shares before selling them to the public.

However, the management of the ‘Nepal Telecom’ has not followed this legal provision and the management made the decision on selling the shares of ‘Nepal Telecom’ to its employees at one price and to the public at another. The public needs to buy at least 100 shares. So, the sale of shares of the ‘Nepal Telecom’ is not for all Nepalis.
