Ending Obstruction of Session of Parliament

Issue 15, April 12, 2009

By KTM Metro Reporter in Kathmandu

Prime Minister Prachanda has started meeting with the leaders of political parties starting with Chairman of Communist Party of Nepal-Unified Marxist and Leninist (CPN-UML) Jhalanath Khanal on Sunday, April 05, 2009.

Nepali Congress (NC), Terai Madhesh Democratic Party (TMDP), and CPN-UML have been obstructing the smooth running of the session of the Constituent Assembly: parliament. Each party has its own reason for obstructing the proceeding of the parliament.

NC members of the parliament have been up in arms to force the government to enforce all previous agreements reached with the government and to get back the property of their colleagues seized by the Maoists during the conflict; TMDP has also the reason for forcing the government to enforce the agreement it has reached with the government; CPN-UML has the reason for forcing the government to arrest the killers of its cadres in Butwal in the last week of March 2009.

Other members of small parties in the parliament are also for obstructing the session of the parliament if they would not receive some slots in the local government to be formed by the major political parties without consulting the fringe parties.

However, the obstruction of the sessions of the parliament would not affect the crafting of a new constitution, as the committees and sub-committees have been working on a new constitution strictly following the schedule according to the Chairman of the Constituent Assembly.

On April 6, 2009, talking to the anchor of state-run Nepal Radio in its morning program, Chairman of CPN-UML Jhalanath Khanal told that the Prime Minster briefed him about his recent visit to Nordic countries in the meeting with the Prime Minister, and then they talked about the need for improving the deteriorating relationship between the two parties.
