Social Mediation Successful To Resolve Disputes In Mahottari

Issue 51, December 22, 2013

By KTM Metro Reporter

December 16, 2013: Social arbitration has proved to be successful in resolving disputes in the Mahottari district. The Community Reconciliation Project run by the Human Rights and Social Development Project in 15 VDCs of the district has resolved 1,594 disputes since 2008 April, according to the RSS news on ‘gorkhapatraonline.com’.

The project has been of great advantage and benefit to the marginalized people such as dalits, women and indigenous people that have no or little access to the judicial and quasi-judicial systems, says Chief Advocate of the Project Ram Chabila Yadav.

The number of social disputes coming to us has gone down since the project implementation, adds Sonamai VDC Secretary Bhagya Chandra Mishra. The project covers Bardibas, Sonamai, Ram Gopalpur, Damhimadai, Sugabhawanipatti, Matihani, Pipara, Pashupatinagar, Aurahi, Meghnath Sarpallo, Sanda, Ankar and Ekdara VDCs.

The funding for the project is ending this December, however, the locals have decided to continue it with the local resources, added Chief Advocate Yadav. Disputes are resolved through the arbitration committees set up by the Project in the target areas with the support from the concerned District Development Committee and Village Development Committees.
